Undiscovered World
"Undiscovered World"
is a black gum vessel #021HL 12" wide and 11" tall.  It features two natural voids and burned texture around the neck.  Its lacquer finish has been buffed to a high gloss.  The spalting in this species is always delicate and, to many, suggestive of a world map.  $old.  Reserve "Undiscovered World"!

Dogwood Root Burl Vessel.  A most unusual piece capturing the intricate figure found in the dogwood root.  It is lacquer finished and measures approximately 8" x 5".  $600.  Reserve Dogwood Root Burl Vessel!

Big Leaf Maple Burl  #I617L is a lacquer finished example of a spectacular piece of mother nature's handiwork.  It measures 15" x 11" x 3".  $old.

Red Oak Vessel #I616L.  This classic southwest design vessel shows the rich color and grain of the red oak wood.  It is 13" wide, 6" tall and finished with lacquer.   $300.  Reserve Red Oak Vessel #I616L!
Box Elder
is a maple species common to the southeast U.S. of minimal commercial value.  It is usually an uninteresting pale color with little figure, but occasionally it will explode with briliant flaming red inclusions.  If you have a piece with this spectacular color be sure you don't put it in a south facing window because it is photoreactive, and ultraviolet light will cause it to fade.

For more information see my document Woodturning 101 - Photo-Reactive Woods.

"Scalloped Passion" Box Elder Bowl #40413 This scalloped and textured box elder bowl is 10" wide by 5" high.  It features a  textured waist band framed by burned coves that highlight the flow of its form.  The wood that produced this wonderful piece was rescued from Ellijay, Georgia.  It has been bleached to lighten the light colors while retaining the brilliant red that is natural in this tree.  The finish is lacquer, rubbed out to a very high gloss.  $325.  Reserve "Scalloped Passsion"!

"Void but not Null" Box Elder Bud Vase #20455 This brilliantly colored vase was carved from a section near the heart of the box elder tree rescued from Ellijay, Georia.  The void in the wall of the vessel was the result of whatever killed the tree forcing its removal.  The natural color was bleached to lighten the lights while leaving the brilliant red exposed.  The black inside serves to dramatize the natural  void.  A glass insert is included for use with real flowers and water.  $325.  Reserve "Void but not Null"!
Box Elder bud vase

Mulberry Vessel #. Mulberry surprises many with it's rich yellow color that mellows to a rich golden brown over time.  When included, the lighter sapwood presents intersting contrasts with the darker heartwood.    $65  Reserve Mulberry Vessel!

Cherry Vessel #023HL is crafted from the krotch of a native cherry tree with voids and bark inclusions.  The intricate figure where the trunks have knitted together is a fascinating display of nature's handiwork.    $65  Reserve Cherry Vessel #023HL!

Cherry
is a perennial favorite with rich color and even figure with occasional interesting variations.
Cherry Vessel #60351 with Walnut Finial  This 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" tall vessel was hollowed from a single piece of native black cherry from Gobler's Nob in north Whitfield County, Georgia and is topped with a 5" high removable walnut finial from Calhoun, Georgia.  It is textured on the top, at the foot, and to highlight the unique lines which cause it to resemble a domed lid nestled in the rim of a bowl.  It is finished with a deep penetrating oil and polyurethane finish which has been polished to a bright satin, but not glassy, sheen.  $195 Sale! $125.  Reserve this piece!

This Poplar vessel features a  walnut cap which  echoes the curves dominating the body resting on a pedestal.  The body and pedestal are from a single piece of tulip poplar.  $75.  Reserve Walnut Lidded Poplar Vessel!

Magnolia Vase #30464 (right) is a magnolia closed form from a tree rescued in the St. Elmo area near Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.  This particular tree had an astounding number of nails in it and the affect of one can be seen in this image.  It is approximately 4.5" wide and 9.5" tall with a highly polished lacquer finish.  A glass vase insert is included.  $125.  Reserve this piece!

Polonia_Vessel_20575_3706+1280x.jpgPaulownia Vessel #20575 is approximately 5" across and 6" tall with just a hint of the bark once there.  While appearing relatively uniform from a distance the growth rings in this piece undulate around it with striking contrast between the summer and winter growth.  The pith is missing from natural causes on both sides.  It is finished in highly polished lacquer.  $old.

More Functional Works
Beautiful  -  Functional  -  Durable  -  Simple Care

Like my heirloom functional works above, each of the pieces in this selection are finished with my 100% food quality oil.  They are finished with the same care, but may include featues or flaws such as knots or voids or cracks which often make them more interesting visually but less well suited to unrestricted use and frequent washing.  The result is beautiful functional art available for considerably less.

Ambrosia Maple Bowl #044HW is approximately 13" in diameter and 5" deep.  It displays a dramatic pattern from the ambrosia beetle and would be a wonderful heirloom piece were it not for the small void in the ambrosia pattern visible on the left if you look carefully.  $old.

Spalted Magnolia Bowl #012HW is 14" in diameter and 6" deep.  It has a striking spalting pattern and was turned with a knot near the bottom that makes it visually interesting, but not suitable for wet foods or frequent washings.  Perfect for bread, chips, nuts, or fruit, this large bowl will add a beautiful touch of class to your home.  $old.
